Economic downturn also come with new career opportunities.
Example its becoming a growing trend that there is an increasing number of Soho (Home based) in Singapore. Many earn much higher salary than their peers. Flexible time, work anywhere anytime. Eg those who sell their goods and services online, wed designers, tuition coordinators etc ... |

Great to know there's still pockets of job demand stability. But it's going to get a bit tough in general for jobseekers currently; anecdotally I know of some 2008 graduates still having problems finding jobs now; it's going to take at least a couple of months before business confidence among employers go up and hiring rates resume uptrend. | ||||

there's a reason why straits times rate these as most stable industries in recession. During recession, more bankruptcy cases and M&As so LAW firms actually earn more profit. People who cannot find jobs will go further their studies until the recession is over, so TEACHING sector profits more too. Do people skip looking for doctors when it's a recession? They don't right? and in fact, the gloomy mood and increased depression will probably make more pple sick and will actually bring more business for HEALTHCARE. For my firm, we deal with 3 types of services - audit, advisory and tax ACCOUNTING. Audit is a no-brainer. Gd or bad times, audit is still required. Advisory will actually see increase for M&A consultancy too. Tax accounting actually helps companies reduces their taxes, thus increasing their profits. Companies will still have to pay taxes during recession and so this service is also not going to be affected. My dept has no history of pple getting retrenched since startup and there's also no probation period. All of us are perm staff and there's no contract staff. We have a shortage of experienced pple in fact and company is actually willing to pay bigger recommendation fees for recommending experienced pple in..

Perhaps so, the key thing is, what about the manpower turnover rate? If it's high, I'd suspect that the more expensive 'old bird' employees are being phased out with new employees coming in as lower cost replacements. I notice there seems to be a trend of lengthening the probation period nowadays for perm staff; some companies are beginning to resort to hiring on contract basis only. Saves the companies a lot on fringe benefits, CPF etc. Bo pian, these companies are still profit driven.
