Potential bidding war! Fortis and Khazanah, now that Khazanah is taking major stake. Fortis unlikely to not do anything: it became the largest shareholder in Mar 10 to take control of board and chairman's seats. Seems to be in jeopardy now. Interesting play.

Mobius Buys BRIC Stocks in Bet Drop Is Bull Market ‘Correction’

May 26, 2010, 5:06 PM EDT

By Mahmoud Kassem

May 27 (Bloomberg) -- Templeton Asset Management Ltd.’s Mark Mobius said he’s been buying stocks in Brazil, Russia, India and China in the past month and called the slump in emerging-economy shares a “correction” in a bull market.

“Despite the fact that a lot of people think that we are entering into a bear market, we don’t believe so,” Mobius, who oversees about $34 billion in emerging markets as Templeton Asset Management’s Singapore-based executive chairman, said in an interview yesterday in Cairo. “This is a correction in an ongoing bull market.”

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index has dropped 16 percent from an April 15 high on concern China’s steps to slow inflation and European nations’ struggle to finance their deficits will derail the global economic recovery. The measure has climbed 94 percent from a four-year low in October 2008 and gained 3.2 percent yesterday, rebounding from the steepest drop since March 2009, on speculation valuations are attractive given prospects for accelerating economic growth.

“When the time comes, emerging markets will recover faster and in a big way,” Mobius said. “We’ve been buying because we have had net flows into our funds. And most of the buying has been in the BRIC countries.”

Templeton has also been buying equities in other nations, including Dubai and Egypt, he said. The firm hasn’t reduced holdings in South Korea because the companies it owns were “relatively inexpensive” when it purchased them and may benefit from international sales should South Korea’s economic rebound stall, Mobius said.

North Korea expelled eight South Korean government workers and threatened to close the border yesterday as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Seoul it’s not too late to make amends for sinking one of the South’s warships.

Greeks Queue to Buy Gold Sovereigns for Financial Security in Turbulent Times!

Liberty Gold Coin

The Austrians, Germans, Greeks and many Europeans are waking up. They are rushing to buy physical gold to protect themselves from the ongoing Euro currency crisis! The Wall Street Journal:

… British gold sovereigns once again are the foreign currency of choice in Greece. Once again, too, they are offering a tangible sense of security amid turbulent uncertainty. In the 1940s, as the only reliable currency available, much of it was hoarded in trunks, under floorboards and buried in gardens. Any respectable girl’s dowry included a cache of sovereigns.

Now they are being used as a physical hedge against fears that Greece may leave the euro zone. For weeks buyers have been queuing patiently in the central bank’s main downtown Athens office, prepared to shell out nearly €273 ($409) per piece, up from €243 at the start of May and €180 last July. Persistent worries that Greece could default at least partly on its debts are emptying the Bank of Greece’s vaults of at least 700 gold coins a day, giving a whole new meaning to the term sovereign debt.

“The public’s renewed interest in sovereigns as an asset started with the collapse of Lehman Brothers,” the daily Kathimerini newspaper wrote. Central bank officials estimate that while Greek demand for the distinctive bullion has been rising by 10 per cent a year since 2008, its price has been soaring by more than 50 per cent.

Greeks’ uncertainty about their future has manifested itself more dramatically in a series of strikes and riots. The markets have been jittery, too, something unlikely to have been eased by remarks last night by Olivier Blanchard, chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, who said: “The markets are wondering if Greece will be able to repay its debt or not.

“Given the behaviour of Greek governments in the past, their uncertainties are understandable.” Sovereigns remained legal tender amid an unstable drachma until 1965, when the Greek government placed restrictions on their trading. Many hoarders cashed in their stocks, although street vendors near the Athens Stock Exchange continued to do a brisk trade in the coins.

The growing run on the bullion sovereign has spawned a thriving black market: in addition to about 50,000 sold legally by the Bank of Greece in the first four months of this year, officials estimate that at least 100,000 have changed hands on the black market at prices of up to €300

FROM DBS daily report..good luck to those who shorted..

We maintain our technical views for O&M stocks Keppel Corp,

SembCorp Marine and Ezra to find interest. The price of Brent

Crude remained supported around USD69-70pbl. We had

highlighted in our Weekly Comments that the preferred entry

levels for the 3 stocks are 1) Keppel Corp – Buy at $8.30, sell

at $9.45 2) SembCorp Marine – Buy at $3.60, sell at $4.15

and 3) Ezra – Buy at $1.63, sell at $2. We maintain our view

for these stocks.

Keppel Corp has fallen to within 10cts, SembCorp Marine

within 5cts and Ezra has reached our preferred entry levels.

We believe that they are poised for a rebound. Even Ezion,

which we highlighted as having downside risk to $0.55 also

reached that level yesterday. Possible catalysts for Keppel Corp

and SembCorp Marine ahead are the potential awards of the

first 2 deep-water rigs contracts by Petrobas as the award of

the 28 rigs building programme has started. This is Phase 1

and the tender for these contracts should close by today.

Phase 2 in the future could award up to 21 rigs and phase 3,

5 rigs. Ezra is simply oversold based on 14-day and 8-wk RSI

as well as weekly stochastics reading. The stock has also fallen

38% below only fundamental fair value of $2.62 and there is

scope for a technical rebound from here.
