The company plans to ship the biodiesel to major markets in China and the region.

Peter Cheng, CEO, Van Der Horst Biodiesel, said: "Within the region, we already have several parties wanting to take up all our production. We have the oil companies in Cambodia and also the oil companies in China."

Industry experts expect biodiesel to replace a significant portion of the diesel market over time. Most recently, the European Union mandated the use of biofuels ? of which biodiesel is a component ? to form 10% of its transport fuel.

Van Der Horst Biodiesel expects the United States, Japan and Korea to follow suit by legislating the use of biofuels in the next few years.

Van Der Horst Biodiesel is seeking feedstock security. It plans to cultivate 1 million ha of jatropha across Asia as feedstock for a number of biodiesel projects in the region, the company's CEO said recently.

Van Der Horst Biodiesel is building 2 biodiesel refineries in Jurong Island and Johor. The first plant, which will cost $40m, will be able to produce up to 200,000tons/year of biodiesel from jatropha and other feedstocks, when it opens at the end of '08. The second plant will be a similar size when it opens in '11.

Van Der Horst Biodiesel CEO Peter Cheng forecast in Apr that the annual revenue from the 2 plants would be $454m.

GKE said that it would buy Van Der Horst Biodiesel. The deal is expected to be completed in Oct.

It proposed to issue 120m new ordinary shares to Kwan Chee Seng (the Investor) at $0.11 each with an option to subscribe another 120m new shares.

It is set to team up with Van Der Horst Biodiesel (VDHB), a joint venture company between Van Der Horst Engineering Services Pte Ltd (beneficially owned by the Investor) and the Institute of Environmental Science & Engineering (IESE). GKE will acquire 100% of VDHB in a sales and purchase agreement inked yesterday. The two-part acquisition will be carried out by cash of $9 million and by issuing 36.36 million new shares from GKE.

VDHB is a newly incorporated company in the renewable energy sector. VDHB intends to construct a production facility in Singapore for the production of biodiesel (using the jatropha curcas plant as feedstock) and has executed a joint venture agreement with IESE to, inter alia, spearhead the adoption and implementation of the biodiesel production process.

It was up as much as 8.5% to a record high of $0.255, after the logistics firm said that it was in discussion with an investor to sell 120 million new shares in the company and to buy a renewable energy business for about $13 million in partnership with the same investor.

The company in a declaration to the exchange said the investor would be granted an option to subscribe another 120 million new shares in GKE International.

Dealers said the investor might take over GKE International in a RTO -- which involves injecting private companies into smaller listed firms.
